Who is Dende and how does he become god of Earth?

The essentials in 30 seconds

Dende is a young Namekian from the Dragon clan met by Gohan and Krillin during the battle against Frieza. After Piccolo merges with the ancient Earth god, the position of Guardian becomes vacant and the Earth Dragon Balls cease to function. Goku goes to the new planet Namek; Dean Moori recommends Dende, who agrees to come to Earth. Thanks to him, Shenron and the Dragon Balls are restored.

Calling Dende “Earth god” can be confusing. In Dragon Ball, this title mainly refers to the Guardian of the Earth, often called Kami: he observes the planet from the celestial palace and maintains the link with his Dragon Balls. Dende becomes neither a Kaioshin, nor the creator of the world, nor a political ruler. He simply succeeds the Namek who held the position before merging with Piccolo.

Warning: This page reveals the Namek, Cell, and Majin Buu arcs, as well as some elements from Dragon Ball Super. The original manga provides the main progression. Adaptations may develop transitional scenes, but they change neither Moori's choice of Dende nor why Earth needs a new Guardian.

Who is Dende before becoming Earth Guardian?

Dende appears as a Namek child in the village ruled by Moori. When Frieza and his soldiers search for the Dragon Balls, his people are massacred. Gohan and Krillin intervene and save him. This meeting creates an immediate bond with the Earthlings: Dende forgets neither their courage nor the compassion they show in the midst of the invasion.

He is not a warrior comparable to Nail or Piccolo. Dende belongs to the Dragon clan, a branch associated with particular abilities. In particular, he possesses healing powers and masters the Namek language. These two qualities become decisive: he heals several injured allies and can formulate the wishes demanded by Porunga.

His participation in the Battle of Namek already requires a lot of courage. He crosses territory guarded by Frieza's forces, helps Gohan and Krillin summon the dragon, then must expose himself to heal their companions. He does not win by physical power; his value comes from skills that the strongest fighters do not possess.

Dende also forms a deep friendship with Gohan. They are both young, immersed in a war waged by adults and tyrants. This confidence explains why his subsequent arrival on Earth is not that of an unknown person. There he finds people he has helped and who already know what he is capable of accomplishing.

To follow the journey of his people, the article on the three suns of Namek sets the scene for their meeting. The one dedicated to Shenron, Porunga and Super Shenron helps to distinguish the dragons that Dende is called upon to summon or maintain.

The Piccolo Dragon Ball collection brings together Earth's most famous Namek and recalls the link between his people and the Dragon Balls. The Dragon Ball figurine collection allows the scene to be expanded to include Gohan, Krillin, Frieza and the other actors from the Namek arc.

Why does Earth no longer have a Guardian before the Cell Games?

The previous Guardian and Piccolo were once a single Namekian. To access the divine function, this being had expelled the evil from his heart; this evil part had become the demon king Piccolo. Later, the latter's son and successor evolves to become Goku's ally. The file on the rapprochement of Piccolo and Goku details this long change.

During the cyborg and Cell crisis, Piccolo chooses to reunite with the Guardian. This merger gives him considerable power and knowledge, but it causes the disappearance of the individual who occupied the position at the palace. Piccolo remains his dominant self in the new personality; he does not install himself as the new Guardian.

The consequence directly concerns the Dragon Balls. The earth dragon depends on its creator Namek. When this creator merges and ceases to exist separately, the balls become inert. The mechanics are explained more fully in why do dragon balls turn to stone?.

This loss comes at the worst time. Cell organizes his tournament and threatens to exterminate the population. The heroes want to have wishes to repair the consequences of the battle and resurrect the victims. Goku is therefore looking for a Namek from the Dragon clan capable of taking over the role and bringing Shenron back to life.

The need is not to replace Piccolo as a fighter. It is about reestablishing a magical institution and a protector from the palace. This difference explains why Goku does not simply ask Piccolo to "remake" the balls: after the fusion, he is no longer their active creator and does not belong to the specialized clan in the same way as Dende.

The collection Son Goku recalls the initiative of the one who leaves to look for a successor. The collection Vegeta Dragon Ball allows us to place the warriors present around the Cell Games, without confusing their martial role with the function of Dende.

Why specifically does Moori recommend Dende?

Goku goes to the new planet Namek and exposes the situation. Moori, who has become the great elder, designates Dende as a prodigy of the Dragon clan. The choice is therefore based on an aptitude recognized by the highest Namek authority, not on chance nor on a unilateral decision by Goku.

Dende also has a human advantage: he already knows Earth and several of its defenders. He fought their way on Namek, understands why they use the Dragon Balls, and trusts Gohan. This familiarity reduces the uncertainty of leaving for a foreign planet.

His young age does not exclude him. Dragon Ball often shows that skill does not exactly follow apparent age, particularly among Nameks. Dende is still small when he arrives at the palace, but his healing powers, his mastery of the namek and his abilities as a creator are already established.

He accepts the mission and returns to Earth with Goku. Mr. Popo, who already served the former Guardian, remains at the palace and accompanies him. The succession thus preserves material and ritual continuity: new Guardian, same place, same assistant and restoration of the dragon from the existing model.

Goku's initial journey to Namek and his return set the stage for this relationship between worlds. To replace this first crossing, consult how Goku survives his journey to Namek. Dende, however, does not take the same long spatial journey for his appointment: Goku then has an instantaneous means of travel.

How does Dende restore Shenron and the Dragon Balls?

Once installed, Dende uses the model of Shenron kept at the palace to restore the dragon and reactivate the seven balls. He can also adjust their abilities within the limits of his own power. The restoration is not an ordinary resurrection of Shenron by a wish: it comes from the skill of the new creator.

Dende increases the number of possible wishes, but this improvement does not abolish all rules. Some wishes consume more capacity, especially when they affect a large number of people. The details therefore depend on the request made. The article on the limits of Shenron allows us to avoid the idea of power without a ceiling.

After a summon, the balls disperse and become temporarily inert. Dende does not have to recreate them after each use: their normal cycle begins again. The guide on their dispersion describes this phenomenon, while that on the return of their energy explains the waiting period.

The Cell Games immediately show the usefulness of this restoration. After Gohan's victory, Shenron resurrects those killed by Cell and removes the explosives placed in the bodies of C-17 and C-18. The Injured Super Saiyan 2 Gohan figurine evokes this fight where the choice of a new Guardian produces its first concrete effects.

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Dende intervenes again on Shenron's abilities so that Piccolo can request the release of his potential. This development confirms that he is not only the passive guardian of an ancient object: he remains the Namek responsible for the earth's magic system.

What role does Dende play during Majin Buu and Dragon Ball Super?

During Majin Buu's crisis, Dende welcomes the fighters' relatives to the palace. He sometimes doubts the decision to make, and Piccolo reminds him that he must assume his role as Guardian. This hesitation does not mean that he is incompetent: he is young and must protect civilians against an enemy capable of destroying the planet.

He survives the destruction of the palace, finds the fighters and uses his healing power again. In the end, he goes to the new planet Namek with the Kaioshin to transmit the wishes to Porunga: restore the Earth, resurrect its inhabitants then give Goku the energy necessary to complete the fight.

This sequence shows the difference between the two dragons. Dende maintains the Earth Dragon Balls, but when these are not enough or the Earth has disappeared, he can speak Namek and call on Porunga with the help of his people. Its dual membership becomes an essential logistical force.

In Dragon Ball Super, he continues to observe Earth and help the heroes from the palace. He is growing physically and gaining confidence. He does not replace Goku, Vegeta or Piccolo in fights; its role is to preserve possibilities that their strength alone cannot provide.

The collection Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu follows the three crises during which Dende goes from survivor to confirmed Guardian. The collection Broly Dragon Ball belongs to another branch of Super and allows you to expand a showcase, without giving Dende a direct role in each confrontation.

Is Dende really the all-powerful god of Earth?

Idea What is right Limit to remember
“Dende is god” He holds the position of Kami, Guardian of the Earth He is not an all-powerful Kaioshin
“He commands Shenron” He creates and maintains the Dragon Balls Vows remain subject to rules
“He protects the planet” He observes, advises, cares for and preserves resources He does not face major enemies alone
“He replaces the old Kami” He resumes his post and the palace He keeps his own personality

Dende does not inherit the identity of the former Guardian. Unlike the merger between Piccolo and Kami, his appointment does not mix their bodies or memories. He remains the young Namekian known to Gohan, now charged with a new responsibility.

Its healing power also cannot undo any death or destruction. He cares for the wounded living; resurrections depend on the Dragon Balls and their limits. Its contribution comes precisely from the association of several tools, not from personal omnipotence.

A Black Goku Rosé figurine with scythe may represent a threat of a later era. She reminds us that a Guardian like Dende does not resolve every crisis with a duel: divine or temporal adversaries often require the intervention of other levels of power.

Frequently asked questions

Who chooses Dende as Earth Guardian?

Goku comes to ask for a Namek capable of taking over the position, but it is Dean Moori who recommends Dende because of his skills in the Dragon clan. Dende then agrees to go to Earth.

Why doesn't Piccolo become the new god himself?

Piccolo merges with the former Guardian to regain their unity and increase his power, but above all he remains Piccolo. The position becomes vacant and the Dragon Balls disappear, which requires the appointment of a new creator.

Did Dende create Shenron?

He restores the earthly Shenron using the model present in the palace and becomes the creator responsible for his Dragon Balls. The old Shenron existed long before his arrival; Dende reactive and adapts this system.

Can Dende resurrect someone without Dragon Balls?

No. His personal gift heals injured living beings, but resurrection requires a power like that of Shenron or Porunga and remains subject to the conditions of the dragon concerned.

Does Mr Popo still work with Dende?

Yes. Mr Popo remains at the palace and assists the new Guardian as he assisted his predecessor. It provides valuable continuity while Dende learns to exercise his responsibilities.

In summary

Dende is a Namekian from the Dragon Clan saved by Gohan and Krillin during Frieza's invasion. When Piccolo merges with the former Guardian, Kami's position becomes vacant and the Earth's Dragon Balls become extinct. Goku asks the new planet Namek for help; Moori points to Dende, a prodigy already close to the Earthlings. Installed in the palace with Mr. Popo, he restores Shenron, heals his allies and becomes an essential protector. His title "god", however, designates a responsible Guardian, not an omnipotent being.
