Why are the cyborgs of the future different?
The essentials in 30 seconds
The C-17 and C-18 of the future are versions from another timeline. They have killed the main warriors, ravaged the Earth for years, and play with Gohan and Trunks like prey. In the main timeline, their doubles seem more powerful according to Trunks, but are much less deadly: they kill Gero, seek Goku in defiance, spare the heroes and then abandon their mission. Time travel produced a different branch, but the manga does not attribute each deviation to a single cause. The presence of C-16, Cell and informed fighters also modifies the encounters.
When Trunks warns Goku, he describes two cyborgs who wiped out Earth's defenders. Three years later, C-19 and C-20 first appear, characters that Trunks does not recognize. Then Gero releases C-17 and C-18, whose power and behavior don't exactly match what he remembers.
This surprise does not mean that the same individuals changed their personal past. Trunks' travels create a new branch. The cyborgs present belong to this branch and have not experienced the catastrophe of the future. Their human DNA and modifications come from Gero, but their environments, encounters, and opportunities to choose differ.
There is even a third important future: the one where Cell comes from. Along this line, Trunks has already eliminated C-17 and C-18 when Cell wants to absorb them. The bio-cyborg then steals the machine and joins the main past. Talking about the “future” in the singular therefore hides several parallel stories.
Spoiler warning: This guide reveals the deaths of the warriors of the future, the choices of the main cyborgs, the temporal origin of Cell, and the subsequent fate of C-17 and C-18.
Trunks' future, the main present and Cell's future do not replace each other
In Trunks' original future, Goku dies of heart disease before fighting the cyborgs. Six months later, C-17 and C-18 kill Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chaozu. Piccolo's death leads to Kami's death and removes the Earth Dragon Balls. Gohan becomes Trunks' last master.
Trunks uses Bulma's machine to warn Goku and give him medicine. He arrives in the past, leaves, then returns three years later. His interventions don't directly repair his world: they produce a branch where Goku receives the treatment and the warriors have time to train.
In this main timeline, Gero first attacks with C-19 and under his identity as C-20. Trunks doesn't know these two opponents. After C-19's defeat, Gero releases C-17 and C-18, then they activate C-16. The composition of the group therefore already differs from the story provided by the traveler.
A third branch is revealed by the abandoned machine. Another Trunks had eliminated his C-17 and C-18 there. Cell kills him and steals the capsule in order to return to a time where their doubles still live. The guide on Cell's perfect form details this trajectory.
The article on Trunks' knowledge of Goku also explains the role of Gohan and Bulma. Trunks knows Goku from their stories before meeting him in the past.
The Son Goku collection recalls the absence that changes everything in the future: his natural death deprives the heroes of a major fighter without being able to be canceled by Shenron according to the rules then known.
Trunks judges the main versions stronger, but his benchmark is imperfect
When C-18 defeats Vegeta and C-17 dominates the other fighters, Trunks states that the cyborgs from his future were not as powerful. His testimony constitutes the most important explicit difference. The main versions exceed the level he was prepared to face.
This estimate, however, is based on his past fights. In the future special story, C-17 reveals to Gohan that he had not used half of his power during their previous confrontation. Cyborgs play with their victims and therefore hide part of their abilities. Trunks may never have measured their exact maximum.
The two elements can coexist: Trunks feels a real difference in the present, but his future reference was itself incomplete. The manga does not provide a numerical table allowing the definitive difference between four individuals to be established on each date.
Their artificial energy further complicates reading. Heroes cannot sense their ki like that of Goku or Vegeta. They gauge their strength by receiving their blows, seeing their speed, and observing their endurance. The absence of fatigue reinforces their advantage over Super Saiyans who spend ki.
The comparison between C-17 and C-18 explains their modified human origin and their virtually inexhaustible generators. The different number does not indicate a single level or absolute order of power.
The Vegeta collection allows us to locate the C-18 shock. The prince has just obtained Super Saiyan and thinks he has overcome any mechanical threat, but his opponent is not exhausted.
In the present, C-17 and C-18 choose rebellion rather than massacre
The versions from the future killed the warriors and then ravaged the Earth for years. They destroy cities and view human survival as a game. Gohan and Trunks have no comparable group to influence them or an adversary like Cell to divert their attention.
In the main present, C-17 also kills Gero, but his first goal is to remove whoever kidnapped, altered, and imprisoned him. With C-18, he activates C-16 against the orders of his creator. The group defeats Vegeta and the others without finishing them off.
C-18 breaks Vegeta's arm but spares Krillin. She kisses him on the cheek before leaving and recommends that he help his friends. C-17 specifies that he will kill the pursuers if they resume the fight, but he prefers to get back on the road.
This restraint does not immediately transform the two cyborgs into heroes. They steal clothes, take a car, and want to kill Goku as part of their programming, which they turn into a personal challenge. Their danger remains real, but their cruelty does not match that of their counterparts of the future.
The manga does not say that a specific component of Gero was changed by Trunks' visit. History has diverged, many circumstances have changed, and individuals are making different choices. To attribute their future goodness to a single screw or a secret resetting would be an invention.
The product Injured Super Saiyan 2 Gohan recalls the contrast between the two Gohans. The one from the future grows up in a lost war; that of the present benefits from Goku, the Room of Spirit and Time and allies capable of changing the outcome.
The Piccolo collection underlines a capital consequence: in the future, his death removes the Dragon Balls; in the present, his fusion with Kami allows him to face C-17 on an equal footing.
The mission against Goku becomes a game of freedom
Gero modified C-17 and C-18 with the goal of eliminating Goku. After killing their creator, they no longer receive active orders. C-17, however, decides to continue the mission because it gives him a destination and a fun challenge.
C-16 is the only one whose desire to kill Goku seems deeply programmed, while being peaceful towards other beings. C-17 and C-18 want to see him act and refuse to take too direct a means. Their car ride turns the hunt into a chosen journey.
In Trunks' future, Goku died before their activation. The original mission is therefore impossible. Without a central target, the cyborgs turn their power against the world and maintain their boredom through destruction. This difference in availability creates a context, but the story does not designate it as the sole cause of their cruelty.
In the present, Goku is kept from combat by his illness, then hidden at Kame House. Before the cyborgs reach him, Cell intervenes and absorbs C-17. The scheduled meeting therefore never takes place in the expected form.
The presence of C-16 also changes the dynamic. He protects nature, refuses to fight needlessly and tries to save C-17 and C-18 from Cell. His calm provides the trio with a different model from the cruelty of future versions.
The Dragon Ball figurine collection allows these trajectories to be brought together without confusing them. The same appearance of C-17 or C-18 can represent opposing choices depending on the timeline.
Cell transforms Goku's hunters into prey necessary for his perfection
The Cell from another future seeks C-17 and C-18 to complete its organism. Its presence had not been announced by Trunks, because the monster belonged to a still distinct timeline and had stolen a machine.
Cell absorbs inhabitants until it overtakes Piccolo, then surprises C-17 despite the intervention of C-16. He becomes semi-perfect and pursues C-18. Tenshinhan, Vegeta, Trunks and Krillin successively have means to stop him, but their efforts and their decisions are not enough.
Vegeta wants to fight the perfect form. Krillin destroys the remote control that would have neutralized C-18. Cell blinds everyone with the Taiyoken and absorbs his second target. Cyborgs do not voluntarily become its components: they lose their freedom the moment it engulfs them.
The techniques inherited by Cell are explained in the article on his Kamehameha, his Taiyoken and his regeneration. This combination allows him to exploit the heroes' flaws as much as his raw power.
C-18 is regurgitated when Gohan hits Cell. C-17 disappears with the monster, then comes back to life thanks to the Dragon Balls after victory. The two main versions thus survive the arc which was to turn them into machine parts.
The tournament organized by Cell is analyzed in our guide to Cell Games. His perfection pushes the antagonist to look for a spectacle, behavior which replaces Gero's initial mission.
The Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu collection allows us to compare domination, absorption and destruction. The cyborgs are standalone characters, not just visual stages of Cell.
The main survivors build a life that their future doubles never knew
Krillin asks Shenron to remove the explosive devices from C-17 and C-18. He cannot make them fully human, as this modification is beyond the power available, but this gesture removes a threat imposed by Gero.
C-18 finds Krillin, marries her and starts a family. Their daughter Marron is born naturally; she is not a cyborg. The article on the couple C-18 and Krillin follows the acts of trust that transform their relationship.
C-17 becomes a forest ranger on an island and protects animals from poachers. He also builds a family off-screen and reappears as a member of the Universe 7 team. His constant energy and composure help him win the Tournament of Power.
This development does not mean that their future counterparts would necessarily have followed the same path if Gohan had spoken to them more. The timelines put similar people in different conditions, but the manga does not deliver a controlled experiment or a complete psychological explanation.
Trunks returns to his future, destroys C-17 and C-18 then eliminates Cell when he comes to steal his machine. He finally obtains temporary peace. Dragon Ball Super later brings Goku Black and Zamasu, as told the article on Trunks' new resistance.
The product Black Goku Rosé with his scythe represents this subsequent threat. It does not retroactively transform the cyborgs: it strikes a line already marked by their reign.
The victory of C-17 in Great is developed in our guide to the Tournament of Power. The destroyer of the future and the protector of animals have a comparable origin, but incompatible paths.
The broly collection and the Vegeta collection offer other examples of characters whose environment influences their choices. This thematic parallel does not merge their continuities.

Frequently asked questions
Are the cyborgs of the future the same people?
These are versions of C-17 and C-18 from another timeline. They share their origin and their appearance, but have not experienced the same encounters.
Why do C-17 and C-18 spare Vegeta and the others?
Above all, they seek their freedom and transform the mission against Goku into a game. The story shows their choice, without providing a single technical modification that would explain all their restraint.
Are the cyborgs of the present really stronger?
Trunks considers them more powerful than those he fought. His estimate remains limited, however, as C-17 reveals in the future that he was fighting Gohan well below his maximum.
Why doesn't C-16 exist in the future story?
Trunks has never met him and doesn't announce it. The manga does not specify whether Gero did not activate it, whether it was destroyed, or whether some other circumstance prevented it from appearing.
Does Cell come from the future of Trunks that we are following?
No. He comes from another branch where Trunks had already eliminated the cyborgs. Cell kills this Trunks and steals his machine before returning to the main past.
Does Trunks' journey save his own future?
He creates a branch where heroes can win, then uses the training gained to free his home world. Deaths in one's future are not automatically undone by changes in the past.
